Courses Developed
EE 661 Power Electronics for Renewable Energy Systems
Departmental elective for B.Tech and M.Tech students
The course covers in detail the power electronic converters, electrical machines, and control methods used for solar PV and wind power generation. The concept of micro-grids and their basic operation is introduced. Both grid-connected and standalone operations and controls are explained. Brief introduction for modular multilevel converters used in offshore wind applications.
EE 663 Design and Realization of Power Converters
Departmental elective for B.Tech and M.Tech students
The objective of this course is to fill the gap between theoretical knowledge of power electronic converters and realizing them practically. In this course, students learn the important concepts needed to design proper power electronic converters, simulation tools, proper designing of multi-layer and power PCB, designing magnetics, reducing electromagnetic interference etc. Towards the end an overview of power converter product designing is given. Students practically design, implement, experimentally test and verify a power converter as part of this course.
HS 200 Sustainable Development Goals
Core course for all
third semester B.Tech students
This is an interdisciplinary course developed together by several departments of IIT Guwahati. From the department of electronics and electrical engineering, the course will introduce technologies for sustainable electrical power. It will give an overview of challenges with extracting power from renewable energy sources, power electronics, electric vehicles, smart grids, and power conversion for renewable energy sources.
Online Teaching
Lecture recordings on video channels of Microsoft Streams
Lectures of the following courses were recorded for online teaching during COVID-19 pandemic:
1. EE 560 Power Electronic Converters
2. EE 661 Power Electronics for Renewable Energy Systems
The lectures can be accessed by subscribing to the video channels on Microsoft Streams (hyperlinked above). Both the course channels have become popular lecture channels in IIT Guwahati during the two online semesters.
Certificate course: "Design of Power Electronic Converters" offered on SWAYAM
Undergraduate level courses on power electronics teach different power converter circuits and methods to analyze them. But all jobs related to power electronics need good knowledge of designing hardware. Proper hardware design in power electronics involves knowledge of several topics which are beyond the scope of a core course in power electronics. This course intends to fill this gap. In this course, students will learn the important concepts needed to design proper power electronic hardware. By the end of the course students should be able to design and test any power electronic converter on their own.

Lab Development
Power Electronics lab
Power electronics lab has been designed and developed to run both UG and PG level power electronic lab courses and support PhD research projects. The lab design was initiated in 2014, it started by supporting 2 M.Tech projects in the year 2015. From 2016 the lab became fully functional with all important facilities required to do power electronics experiments. At present the lab supports following:
B.Tech course EE 371– Advanced Electrical Engineering Lab
M.Tech course EE 561 – Power Electronics Lab
10 PhD research projects
M.Tech projects on power electronics
B.Tech hardware projects
Power and Control R&D lab
The power and control R&D lab of Dept. of EEE facilitated simulation work for Ph.D. research projects, till 2016. The lab has been upgraded in 2017 with 6 experimental test benches for power electronics research and other hardware experiments. At present, the lab supports about 12 simulation-based PhD projects and 3 power electronics related PhD projects.
